Dan Fenn — Al Jacobson — Lew Counts — Beth Walsh

Four people who were very special to the Voices on the Green community passed away within the last several years. Two of them – Dan Fenn and Al Jacobson – told stunning and memorable stories when we all knew their time was very short. The third – Lew Counts – told the visual story of Voices on the Green through his photos, the last taken just months before his passing.  The fourth, Beth Walsh showed all of us what Voices on the Green, at its very best, could sound like.

Beth Walsh (d. October 6, 2022)

Beth Walsh

Beth Walsh brought her magnificent voice and her extraordinary vitality to our stage in two different shows. Unlike most of our performers, Beth came with a professional background in musical theatre: she starred in regional theatre, summer stock, off-Broadway, and on national tours. Fortunately, she moved to Lexington to raise her family, joined First Parish, became the choir’s soprano soloist—and we all “discovered” her.  Whether it was Handel or Sondheim, Beth sang with astonishing clarity and vibrancy, one of the best Voices ever heard on the Green.

Secrets and Lies

Beth sang 5 songs in this show, a great display of her range and inventiveness. See all 5 of them by opening the “Previous Shows” tab in the top of the page and click on “In Memoriam.”

Her favorite (and ours) was the last song of the show, Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns.” Take time to remember her with it.

Dan Fenn (1923-2020)

Dan Fenn

Dan Fenn was widely admired as a leader in the First Parish Community, the Town of Lexington, the Kennedy Administration in Washington, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and the Kennedy Library in Boston.  Surprisingly, the story he wanted to tell at Voices on the Green was not about his many years with the Kennedys, or even about government, politics or leadership. Instead, he wanted to tell his own personal life-changing story about falling in love.

Al Jacobson (1942-2018)

Al Jacobson

Al Jacobson was a highly successful businessman and strategic consultant in the financial services sector.  But most of his colleagues, friends, and family know him also as a passionate, selfless, and unusually effective advocate for justice, equality, and human rights both locally and around the world.  His story, given just months before he died, was a passionate and inspiring call to remember, invoke, and even “index” the great healing power of love.

Lew Counts (1940-2020)

Lew Counts was a pioneer in the electronics industry who, as Vice President of Analogue Devices, led teams of engineers in the development of scores of innovative and highly successful products over four decades. In his “spare” time, he dedicated considerable time and resources to caring for First Parish’s building and its illumination.  An avid photographer, Lew showed up on the first night of Voices with his camera and has faithfully, and vividly, captured our history ever since (he later recruited Don Cohen to help).  Most of the photos on this site were taken by Lew.
